One of those magical moments in the garden happened this week while I was watering our magnolia tree - a little ruby-throated hummingbird came over and took a bath in my hosewater! He hovered in the light spray, then went to a branch to preen, and came back into my spray about 4 or 5 times! Each time after his bath he'd go to a nearby branch to preen himself. He came to within about a foot of my arm and hovered there for a moment checking me out before deciding I was trustworthy. It was really amazing, what gorgeous little birds. I've never interacted with one quite that closely before, he seemed really intelligent for such a tiny creature.
